World of Verbcraft is a fun English learning game designed by Johannes König, Nicole Nedeltschew and Lukas Schnabel. The background music has been composed by Simon Öggl. The game has designed for pupils learning English in order to combine business with pleasure, or more precisely practicing English regular and irregular verbs through a fun gameplay experience. WoV is an online game and therefore easily accessible via three platforms: computer, tablet and mobile phone.
You can play the game here.
The game is set in an enchanting mystical magic world, deep in a spooky forest where dark enormous trees sprawl everywhere as far as the eye can reach nearly covering a small wooden and obscure chalet. Some steps in front of the cottage, two bubbling magic cauldrons are located, the left one having the letter I and the right one having the letter R written on its bulge – and you cannot help but wonder what these cryptic letters might mean. Having seen this scenery the player is literally able to picture strange things occurring in this enigmatic woods. If you listen carefully to the music you can actually hear bats and birds screeching which contributes to an enhanced gameplay experience.
You need to play the game form the arcade at GameSalad. You simply enter your name into the scroll and eventually press the start button. Now, the gameplayer steps in the World of Verbcraft and a countdown pops up signalising the imminent beginning of the game: 3….2….1
You are presented with an English verb appearing on a scroll at the top centre, you read the word out loud and need to decide if the verb is a regular or irregular verb and finally drag it into the left cauldron containing the “irregular-verb-potion” or into the right cauldron containing the “regular-verb-potion”. A simple procedure!
If you have chosen the right bowl and consequently the correct classification of the verb you ought to hear a bubbling sound. In the contrary case, you are “punished” by a drumbeat indicating that you have selected the wrong cauldron. But don’t worry, as the proverb has it, practice makes perfect! WoV has exactly been developed to assist young learners to practise regular and irregular verb forms. Thus, if you continue practising you will soon improve and be able to match the verbs to its categories. Moreover, the game has a ticker counting backwards which means that the player has sixty seconds to complete the game. Whenever you have put the word into one of the cauldrons, using either the computer mouse or moving your finger along the display in case of a touchscreen, a new verb emerges. Every verb which has been matched correctly earns you 100 points and as a special feature there is a multiplier which awards you with even more points if you have had five correct allocations. In addition, it provides a stimulus for a focused play. Once your 60 seconds expire the player has the possibility to view the results and his or her personal high score.
World of Verbcraft has been created for learners of English for the purpose of facilitating learning regular and irregular verb tenses imbedded in a playful video game. Moving along with the spirit of the time the game is supposed to attract eminently young people and make learning English pleasantly. The idea originated in the strong desire to compile an English session in a diversified and advanced manner. As future teachers of English the design team intended to offer not only their prospective students an intense, educational and amusing gaming experience but also every teacher with the ambition to try out innovative teaching methods a new teaching tool.
The game can be seen as a first prototype which can easily be expanded. The originators are still collecting ideas for further diversification, for instance enlarging the background story of the dark forest, matching synonyms and antonyms, adding a sound file with the word’s pronunciation which would have to be ascribed to different varieties of English. Moreover, creating the possibility for teachers and pupils to be able to enter own words for individual learning aims and thus, not only being exposed to game experience but actively participating in the process.
